Berlin, 06 June, 2024 – MKS’ Atotech, a leading surface finishing brand within the Materials Solutions Division of MKS Instruments, will participate in The Battery Show Europe 2024, showcasing innovative surface finishing technologies for battery components and presenting in the Products Showcase session of the conference.
Surface treatment technologies are critical to improving battery efficiency and safety by addressing corrosion and adhesion issues that can compromise performance. These solutions not only address cell-level issues, but also extend their benefits throughout the battery ecosystem, including modules, packs, and thermal management system components. As battery technology evolves, new challenges arise, such as the need for improved adhesion promotion, stronger corrosion protection, and treatments for lightweight materials used in structural components. The multiple functions of different parts in electric vehicle designs add to the complexity, while specific concerns such as electromagnetic shielding and improved conductivity become increasingly important. MKS’ Atotech is at the forefront of addressing all these challenges with customized solutions.
With the emphasis on weight reduction in batteries, aluminum is becoming more prevalent, especially in components such as heat sinks and housings. Our aluminum surface treatment expertise and products help customers meet new requirements for corrosion resistance and improved adhesion to paint, fire retardant coatings, or structural adhesive bonding. By combining these products with our low-temperature, long-life pretreatment solutions, customers can significantly reduce their CO2 emissions and improve the overall value proposition of batteries.
MKS’ Atotech is committed to developing more sustainable and more cost-effective solutions. For example, the new passivation process for copper current collector foils and our complete process system for electromagnetic shielding are both Cr(VI)-free, addressing concerns raised by increasingly stringent regulations like REACH. In addition, our auxiliary equipment solutions enable zero-emission plating operations, promote the recycling and reuse of valuable metals from line rinses, and address the critical issue of battery recycling.
Special product features at our booth A70 in hall 8 include:
CuProtect® XL ‒ Cr(VI)-free post-treatment, operating at high speed in high current densities with short exposition times.
Covertron® 600 – Cr-free pretreatment for plastic metallization suitable for the ABS, ABS/PC, and 2K/3K/ selective materials that are currently produced with Cr(VI)-based processes.
UniPrep® ‒ Long life, low temperature cleaning solutions, achieving superior cleaning performance with optimized operating cost and reduced energy demand.
Interlox® ‒ Zirconium-based conversion coatings and passivates for enhanced paint and adhesive bonding, offering peak corrosion performance and optimized operating cost.
Nichem® MP 1188 ‒ Mid-phosphorus electroless nickel solution, providing non-magnetic, highly corrosion resistant, and pit-free deposits for battery terminals and lead tabs and ensuring superior chemical and corrosion resistance.
Cupracid® Up ‒ Advanced copper plating solution, used as an intermediate layer between nickel strike or immersion copper layer and the top electromagnetic shielding nickel iron layer.
On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at 3 pm, our battery fastener conductivity experts, Dennis Stritter and Beatrice Occhionero (Agrati), will speak on the topic: “Enhancing electrical and mechanical performance in bolted busbar connections” in the conference’s Product Showcase Session.
